Fix your Google Business Profile before you boost a post
Do five free things before you spend anything: claim the profile and start verification, set one specific primary category, fix the name and description, add your service areas and public-holiday hours, then ask for reviews and reply to every one. It takes one evening and costs HK$0. Verification is the only slow step, so start it first.
About to put HK$200 behind a boosted post? Do these five things to your Google Business Profile first. They are free, they take one evening, and unlike the boost they are still working next March.
Verification is the only step you have to wait on, so start it tonight and do the other four while it runs.
The five fixes, in the order that pays
| Fix | What to enter | How to tell it worked |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Claim and verify | Your real business name, address and phone number | Search your own name while signed in, and the owner controls appear on the result |
| 2. Primary category | The one thing your business is — Nail salon, not Salon | The category shows under your name on your own profile card |
| 3. Name and description | One language in the name field; up to 750 characters in the description, no links | The edit saves, and the change shows within about 10 minutes |
| 4. Service areas and hours | The districts you really travel to, up to 20, plus special hours for the five 2026 holidays left | Those dates show your special hours instead of your usual ones |
| 5. Reviews | A reply on every review, good and bad | Your reply appears under the review, marked as coming from the owner |
Fix 1: Claim the profile, and start verification tonight
Google builds profiles from third-party data and from things other people contribute, so a profile for your shop may already exist, carrying hours you never set.
For a single location you manage the profile inside Google Search itself, not in a separate dashboard:
- Sign in with the Google account you want to own the profile.
- Search your business name, or just the words my business. If a profile exists and nobody has claimed it, the owner controls appear on the result.
- If nothing is there, go to business.google.com/add and create it.
- If someone else is already managing it, choose Request Access. Google emails them and they have 3 days to respond. If they do not, you may get the option to claim the profile by completing verification yourself.
- Verify. You do not pick the method — Google decides it, and it cannot be changed. Where video is offered, Google recommends it.
Review takes up to 5 business days, which is why this one goes first.
Fix 2: Set one primary category, and make it specific
The primary category is the strongest relevance lever on the profile, and most half-filled Hong Kong listings lose here by being vague.
Google's test is blunt. The category has to complete "this business is a", not "this business has a". Its own worked example is to choose Nail salon rather than Salon. You cannot invent one either — you pick from Google's list.
Path: Edit profile › Business category › Edit. Add anything genuinely secondary with Add another category, then stop.
Start typing and you will find Tutoring service, Dentist, Nail salon, Hairdresser, Electrician, Plumber.
One Hong Kong trap, worth knowing before you look. Checked on 5 September 2026 against a live export of Google's category list, the English list held 4,044 categories and the Traditional Chinese list 2,587 — and Tutoring service, Electrician and Plumber were all absent from the Chinese one. If your category is not there, switch the interface to English and search again.
Fix 3: Rewrite the name, then the description
Google updated its name guidelines on 10 August 2026. Repeating the same business name in more than one script or language is now disallowed, even when the shopfront sign genuinely reads that way. The examples Google gives are Kafiex / カフィエクス and Burger King バーガーキング.
That lands hard here, because a Hong Kong sign says both by default. Pick the name customers say out loud when they phone you, take the other out of the name field, and put it in the description instead.
The name field also cannot carry a tagline, a phone number, a URL, an address, or a description of what you sell.
For the description: Edit profile › Description, up to 750 characters, no URLs and no HTML. Write what you do, who you do it for and which districts you cover, then the second-language name.
Google says profile changes usually show up in about 10 minutes, and in some cases can take up to 30 days. If nothing appears straight away, leave it rather than editing again.
Fix 4: Set the service area, then the holiday hours
A service-area business gets up to 20 service areas, and Google adds a real constraint: the boundary of your overall area should not be more than about 2 hours of driving time from where the business is based. In Hong Kong that ceiling almost never binds, which is why so many trades listings simply claim the whole territory.
Path: Edit profile › Location › Service area.
If you do not serve customers at your business address, Google's guidance is direct: take the address off the profile.
Then set special hours for the dates you will actually be shut. The Hong Kong general holidays left in 2026:
- Saturday 26 September — the day following the Mid-Autumn Festival
- Thursday 1 October — National Day
- Monday 19 October — the day following Chung Yeung Festival
- Friday 25 December — Christmas Day
- Saturday 26 December — the first weekday after Christmas Day
Set all five tonight and you do not have to touch it again this year.
Fix 5: Ask for reviews, and reply to every one
Local results rest on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Reviews feed prominence. Google's current wording is that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. It does not promise you a position, and neither will we.
Ask at the moment the job is finished, while the customer is still in front of you, rather than by mass email a month later. Reply to every review, including the bad ones: the reply is read by the next prospect, not by the reviewer.
Ask everyone the same way. Google's policy bans discouraging negative reviews, bans asking only the happy customers, and bans offering a discount or anything else in exchange for a review.
One dead end, so you do not go hunting for it: since 31 July 2024, chat and call history are no longer part of a Business Profile. Google's advice is to put your phone number on the profile so customers can call you. Any Hong Kong guide still telling you to switch on Google chat is describing a screen that is gone.
How to tell it worked
Give it a month, then open the performance view on your profile. It reports calls, direction requests and website clicks. Watch those three. A rise is a signal worth acting on, not proof that one particular fix caused it — you changed five things at once, and you also have whatever season you are in.
Then do the unglamorous check. Search your own business name on a phone you are not signed in on, and read the card the way a customer would. Wrong hours and a missing phone number are the two faults that quietly cost you the call.
Hong Kong specifics worth getting right
The bilingual name rule is the one that will bite. A 補習社 (tutoring centre) whose sign reads 「明德補習社 Ming Tak Tutorial Centre」 has to pick one of those two for the name field as of August 2026, and put the other in the description.
Name districts, not the territory. Google's published geo-target list carries 17 of Hong Kong's 18 districts plus 85 neighbourhoods, so Sha Tin, Tai Po and Sai Kung are each selectable and read as a real catchment. "Hong Kong" reads as a business that covers nowhere in particular.
Read Google's help pages in English. The Chinese versions carry Google's own machine-translation notice, and it is the English wording that decides whether a profile gets suspended.
Why the free profile beats the paid boost
Google carried 90.96% of Hong Kong search traffic in August 2026, and 96.8% of the population was online at the end of 2025. So when someone in Sha Tin looks for a tutor or an electrician, the first thing on screen is a Business Profile card: name, rating, hours, call button. Google's own line is that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results.
The difference that matters on a small budget is duration. A boost stops the day the money runs out. The profile is still answering at 11pm on a Sunday, for nothing.
When boosting a post is genuinely the right move
Boosting is not useless, and a guide that tells you it is has something to sell. A boost earns its money when you have a dated, perishable offer and an audience that already knows you: a clinic with three slots left before 1 October, a salon running a Mid-Autumn promotion, a restaurant with a set menu for one week only. It is also a cheap way to find out which image people respond to before you commit real budget in Ads Manager.
What a boost cannot do is make you findable next March. Spend on it after the profile is fixed, not instead of it.
What we would skip
Skip category stuffing. Google gives you a primary category plus up to 9 more, and the folklore says fill every slot. Google's own guideline says the opposite: use as few categories as possible, do not use categories as keywords, and do not add one for every product or service you offer. We have run no experiment of our own on Hong Kong listings, so we follow the published guideline rather than the folklore.
Check the page they land on
Your profile is one half of the decision. The other half is the page a customer sees when they tap through to your website, and that half is where most enquiries are lost. Paste your URL into the free WITTI Grow audit and you get a score, the SEO and conversion problems we find, and a 7-day plan. No signup, no credit card.

Common questions
- Is a Google Business Profile free?
- Yes. Creating it, verifying it and managing it cost nothing, and all five fixes in this guide cost HK$0. Google makes its money from Ads, not from the profile. If someone quotes you a fee to register your business on Google, they are charging you for work that is free.
- I already boost posts on Facebook. Do I still need a Business Profile?
- Yes, because the two do different jobs. A boosted post interrupts people who were not looking for you. A Business Profile answers people who are already searching for what you sell. Google carried 90.96% of Hong Kong search traffic in August 2026, so the profile is where demand that already exists gets picked up.
- Can I put both my Chinese and English business name on Google?
- Not since Google updated its name guidelines on 10 August 2026. Repeating the same business name in more than one script or language is disallowed, even when the shopfront sign shows both. Pick the name customers say on the phone, and put the other one in your description and on your website.
- How many service areas should a Hong Kong trades business list?
- Google allows up to 20, and says the boundary of the overall area should stay within about 2 hours of driving time from your base. In Hong Kong that ceiling almost never binds, so the useful limit is honesty: list the districts you will actually travel to on a Tuesday morning, not the whole territory.
- Someone else has already claimed my business on Google. What do I do?
- Go to business.google.com/add, enter your business name and address, pick your business from the results and choose Request Access. Google emails the current manager, who has 3 days to respond. If they approve, you get access. If they do not respond, you may get the option to claim the profile by completing verification yourself. Start this first, because it is the slowest step.
